Hiring Bookkeeper & Call for Board of Directors
HIRING: BOOKKEEPER (part-time, contract)
In its 25th season, Urban Ink’s mission is to uplift Indigenous and diverse voices through live performance. Urban Ink is known nationally for its extraordinary large scale theatre productions and national and provincial tours, in addition to recent short and feature films. Working closely with Management, the Bookkeeper will ensure that Urban Ink’s financial duties and reporting requirements are done in an accurate and timely manner.
GENERAL DUTIES include but are not limited to:
Payroll
- Weekly while in production (6-12 weeks on average)
- Semi-monthly, when not in production
- Monthly, for month end bank reconciliation
Weekly
- Preparation of invoices (revenue)
- Equity and other production payroll
Semi-monthly
- Payroll

- Posting all vendor invoices and payments (including out of pocket reimbursements, petty cash reconciliations)
- Posting of incoming revenues (ticket reconciliations, government grants, contributed revenues)
- Month end bank reconciliation
- Month end credit card reconciliation
Annual or year end
- Ensure accurate recording of deferred revenue transactions.
- Reconcile prepaid expenses, clearing accounts, and applicable schedules
Compliance:
- Complete GST and CRA returns on schedule
- Annual preparation of T4s and T4As, prepare ROEs
- CADAC
- GASR
Other
- Provide feedback on existing processes and implement of new processes to improve internal controls and collaborate on the preparation of the contingency plan in consultation with the team
- Manage finance related projects as they arise
What Urban Ink does
- Organize and maintain financial files and internal accounting records in a paperless file system
QUALIFICATIONS
- Completion of basic accounting courses required, either completion of an Accounting Diploma (such as ACAF) or CPA candidate working towards a CPA designation, Certified Professional Bookkeeper or applicable experience
- Ability to embrace change and contribute to continuous process improvements, ability to show initiative
- Capacity to work independently
- Excellent verbal and written communication, interpersonal and customer service skills
- Strong attention to detail, efficient, accurate and consistent
- Proven problem-solving abilities and solid analytical skills
- Excellent computer skills, particularly proficient with QBO, Microsoft Office (Word and Excel)
- Minimum 2 years accounting experience in a similar role
- Not-for-profit experience is an asset

REMUNERATION
Hourly rate commensurate with experience and qualifications: $32-$35 per hour, flexible work week on an hourly contract basis based on programming schedule.

Based on the unceded territories of the xʷməθkʷəy̓əm (Musqueam), Skwxwú7mesh (Squamish), and səl’ilwətaɁɬ (Tsleil-Waututh) peoples, we support Indigenous and diverse artists, providing opportunities to those in our diverse community, while paving the way for new practices. Board Description
Urban ink is seeking expressions of interest from individuals for various positions on our Board of Directors. We seek candidates who are open to and respect Indigenized Practices as Urban Ink is engaged in new ways of working with an Indigenous lens.
We strongly encourage applications from individuals who are members of marginalized and/or underserved/underrepresented communities, especially those who identify as: Indigenous or people of colour, or people living with disabilities. We welcome those from diverse age groups, gender identities, and sexual orientations.
Responsibilities
We seek Board members that are committed to the following responsibilities:
- Commitment to the mission, values, and work of Urban Ink;
- Provide strategic leadership and fiscal stewardship to Urban Ink;
- Connect Urban Ink’s leadership and the organization to the community, and prospective sponsors, donors and partners;
- Attend scheduled board meetings as well as Annual General Meetings;
- Contribute to various committee objectives;
- Support productions and special events; assist in developing and maintaining positive relations among stakeholders and the community.
Qualifications
We are seeking Board Members who have skills or experience in some or any of the following areas:
- Finance and Accounting
- Human Resources
- Fundraising, Marketing, PR and Communications
- Arts Administration, non-profit governance, or a background in the Performing Arts
Commitment
Urban Ink will hold approximately six Board meetings a year, of about two hours each. In addition, members may expect to spend an additional two to four hours every other month on committee or working group activities or attending a performance or event. Directors shall be elected to one- or two-year terms, with eligibility for renewal.
